In November, word broke that Gary Miller—known professionally as Dr. Know, guitarist of the legendary Bad Brainswas hospitalized, allegedly on life support. At the time Miller’s family asked that fans send him PMA but asked for their privacy, so we didn’t know just how bad things were.

In an update posted on the band’s Facebook page, the situation, it sounds, was not good. Miller suffered cardiac arrest and “his condition quickly progressed to multiple organ failure, and he was on life support for almost 2 weeks.” It was so bad that doctors “gave him a 5 [percent] chance of survival.” The good news is that Miller pulled through and is currently recovering in a rehabilitation facility. But after spending nearly three months in the hospital, Miller has racked up heavy medical bills, which the band has turned to GoFundMe for fans to help out:

We started this campaign in an effort to raise money for Doc’s medical expenses and additional care that will be needed once he returns home. Doc did not have medical insurance at the time of his hospitalization, and the multiple medical bills have created an overwhelming financial strain that Doc and his family are not able to handle on their own. Since Doc has been unable to work since early November when this happened, he also needs help with his living expenses until he can make a full recovery and get back to work.

All of the funds raised are going directly into a bank account created by a “representative of the Bad Brains specifically for this purpose,” the GoFundMe page states. Thus far, more than $15,000 has been raised since the fund was started yesterday.
