Seminal D.C. hardcore band Dag Nasty played a sold-out show at Black Cat last night, an early celebration for its forthcoming 7″ release next month. Dag Nasty reunited for a one-off show in 2012, its first time together with vocalist Shawn Brown since 1985, and Thursday’s show proved that band chemistry doesn’t fade. Brown paced the stage, tearing into songs new and old, even diving into the crowd at one point, while guitarist Brian Baker, drummer Colin Sears, and bassist Roger Marbury tore a hole in the musical ozone layer. A high point came in the encore when the band played a raging rendition of Government Issue’s “Understand,” in honor of GI vocalist John Stabb, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. “I cut my teeth on GI,” said Brown. “So much PMA to John.”
All these years later, the chemistry of Dag Nasty remains indelible and true, with songs that will kick your ass.
