It’s a common response to cat-calls on local street harassment blog Hollaback DC: Snap a photo of your harasser and share his face with the world. Now, Hollaback DC hopes to turn its anti-hollerin’ tactic into an artform: The blog is hosting its first ever street harassment photography contest.

Here are the rules: The contest is open “to all individuals, particularly those who capture gender-based public sexual harassment photographs in the D.C. metro area.” Apply online. Submit the entrance fee of $5 (via Paypal). Enter up to three photos by midnight August 12 (via the Hollaback DC Flickr group). Winners will be notified by August 19.

Selected photographs will be displayed at the upcoming October 2009 “Holla Back DC! Make DC Harassment Free Opening Reception”—-date and location to be announced. All proceeds from the sale of the photographs will go to the photographers.

Snapping photographs of street harassers is helpful for a number of reasons: (a) even though street harassment is by definition a public activity, it’s often not recognized as something that actually happens; (b) hey, fuck street harassers! The challenge is in capturing verbal assault in a still photograph. At least one anonymous Hollaback contributer has already got a harassment photo to beat (above).
