Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays (PFOX), everyone’s favorite advocacy group for the oppressed minority that wasn’t, hasn’t just been successful at inventing new sexual orientations. Now, PFOX has also managed to secure the “appreciation” of people who don’t actually appreciate them—-like District Mayor Adrian Fenty.
According to anti-ex-gay (whew) group Truth Wins Out, PFOX has been touting a “Certificate of Appreciation” awarded to PFOX Executive Director Regina Griggs courtesy of the government of the District of Columbia, and signed by Adrian Fenty. The certificate, which is posted on the PFOX website, is dated Nov. 16 of last year. According to a PFOX press release, the organization secured the certificate in order to honor Griggs’ ten-year anniversary of officially wishing gay people wouldn’t by gay anymore. The certificate commends her for her “dedication, commitment, and outstanding contributions” toward this end.
According to Mayor’s Office Director of Communications Mafara Hobson, Fenty does not, in fact, appreciate Griggs. Hobson says that PFOX requested the certificate, and the D.C. government agreed to provide it on accident. She writes:
A staff level error was made when the request for the certificate in question was fulfilled. We apologize for the error as it runs contrary to the Mayor’s vision of a more open and inclusive city.
The Mayor is proud of his ardent support of the LGBT community as illustrated in his championing of the Marriage Equality legislation which he signed into law on December 18, 2009.
Besides, PFOX isn’t even located in D.C.—-it’s run out of Grigg’s home of Reedville, Va.
