This morning, I spotted what can only be described as a sculptural advertisement in Adams Morgan.

Well, I neglected to see the one literally diagonally across the street at the intersection of 18th Street and Columbia Road.

These things—-40 of them, to be exact—-should be popping up all over the place. Our photographer Darrow Montgomery reported some in Dupont Circle.

Apparently, there’s going to be a centralized exhibit in Union Station, starting tomorrow and going through Sept. 15. But the exhibit also will spread throughout the city, according to this Union Station announcement below.

The Main exhibition will be complete with 15 giant hearts representing 15 relevant topics of the country.  This event is part of a larger Colombia Tourism initiative involving 40 mobile hearts placed around Washington, DC inviting viewers to this exhibition.

As one commenter pointed out, there was a small item in the Washington Post about the exhibit. But that piece, which reads like a regurgitated press release, doesn’t discuss the fact that these “heart-shaped sculptures” are more advertisement than art. The campaign’s creators did get a public space permit, according to John Lisle, spokesperson for the Department of Transportation. Kind of weird. Even Lisle guessed they were probably “not supposed to be there” when I first reached him.
