You know your building has been boarded long enough when someone decides to use the plywood for a canvas. Over the weekend, a large wheatpaste showed up on the northeast corner of the intersection of Calvert and Connecticut, a piece of prime retail space that has been empty for months now. A similar paste also appeared on the boarded-up buildings on the east side of 14th Street just north of W. If Mayor Fenty gets his way with the budget, it’ll soon be a lot more expensive to keep those properties vacant, with a proposed return to the steeper fees that were relaxed last year. But the D.C. Building Industry Association and others have been lobbying against it for the last few weeks, so we’ll see if it survives—and meanwhile, enjoy the art.
