In March, we learned about how the Office of Planning had nudged WV Urban Development into making its depressingly large, car-centric Walmart/Lowes/Other Chain Store project on New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road NE slightly more people-friendly. Now, the District Department of Transportation has seen what it needs to sign off on the plan as well, and asked for a few concessions. Here are a couple, paraphrased:

  • DDOT wants the developer to sign a Memorandum of Agreement to help fund improvements for several local bus lines, as well as construct at least three bus stops.
  • The developer has already agreed to pay for “a complete overhaul of all streetscape facilities” including sidewalks, crosswalks, pedestrian signals, and bike lanes around the site.
  • Instead of the north end of the site, a Capital Bikeshare station will be located at the core of the site, for better retail access.
