Rejoice, Washingtonians! Your city has the 17th-fastest-growing average income in the country!

OK, so maybe that’s not all that impressive. After all, with our 9.7 percent growth rate between 2007 and 2011, we’re no Chico, Calif., which came in at No. 1 with a whopping 32 percent increase, according to Nerd Wallet.

Then again, we probably don’t want to be. Chico’s median income for workers in 2011 was $20,979. D.C.’s, despite slower growth, was more than twice that, at $46,112.

In fact, of the 20 cities with the fastest income growth, only two have incomes higher than D.C.’s—-or really, anywhere near D.C.’s. And those two are Mountain View, Calif. (home to Google) and Yorba Linda, Calif. (birthplace of Richard Nixon and America’s highest-income city as of 2006). Both have populations only about a tenth the size of D.C.’s.
