In an unusually alliterative move, the city is making three former school buildings available to new charter school tenants.

Yesterday, the Department of General Services released solicitations for two school buildings: Shadd Elementary School at 5601 East Capitol Street SE, which closed in 2011 and has since been occupied by the University of the District of Columbia and DC Scholars Public Charter School, and the special-needs Sharpe Health School at 4300 13th Street NW, which is moving to River Terrace next year. Public charter schools can submit proposals to take over these buildings by Nov. 25, and they’re supposed to have first dibs on them.

Speaking of which: Today, the city awarded the former Shaed Elementary School building at 301 Douglas St. NE to a collaboration between Inspired Teaching Demonstration and Lee Montessori Public Charter Schools. According to a press release from the mayor’s office, the new school will house about 500 students from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade. The Lee Montessori component is expected to move to a separate site at a later date to serve around 350 students from pre-k to fifth grade.

Shaed was closed in 2011 due to low enrollment and has since been vacant. The new school is expected to open there for the 2014-2015 school year.
