After years of anticipation, political battles, activist opposition, and wage debates, D.C.’s first two Walmart stores will open on Dec. 4.
The locations, at 1st and H streets NW and on Georgia Avenue NW, will feature a much more urban model than Walmart shoppers are accustomed to. Gone are the surface parking lots. Accompanying the stores will be additional ground-floor retail. The H Street store will also have residential units above it.
According to Walmart spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg, the company is hiring about 300 associates for each store and has received more than 23,000 applications for D.C. Walmart jobs.
The stores will open at 8 a.m. on Dec. 4. Like ’em or hate ’em, expect a crush of excited shoppers.
