D.C.’s cinema boom continues, with an six-screen Landmark Theatres movie theater coming to the Atlantic Plumbing building at 8th and V streets NW in late 2015.

The theater will be part of the 10-story, 290,000-square-foot, 310-apartment development by the JBG Companies that’s replacing the old Atlantic Plumbing building next to the 9:30 Club. JBG told me in May that a small cinema would be part of the development, and rumors of the theater circulated as far back as 2012, but only this afternoon did JBG and Landmark announce concrete plans.

This theater joins a growing list of planned cinemas in the District, including a 10-screen Landmark theater in NoMa, an Angelika Film Center at Union Market, and a 16-screen theater in Capitol Riverfront. It remains to be seen whether there’s enough demand in D.C. to support a doubling of the city’s number of movie theaters, although this will be the closest one to the growing population centers of Logan Circle, the 14th and U area, and Columbia Heights.

“Our customers are going to love what we are planning,” says Landmark Theatres CEO and President Ted Mundorff in a statement, promising an “indoor-outdoor café” and “very high end seating.”
