Clara Cannucciari, both in 1915 in Chicago, has become a minor Internet celebrity with her YouTube series of videos, Great Depression Cooking with Clara. In this one, Clara shows us how to cook peppers and eggs. My enjoyment here comes not from Clara’s tips—-I mean, how hard is it to saute some sliced peppers and mix in whisked eggs?—-but from the affection with which Clara is videotaped. The close-ups, the warm light, the long lingering takes…they all speak to a deep respect for Clara and her experiences during the Depression.
Besides, who knows? Her recipes might come in handy for some of us in the near future.
