Hanukkah officially started on Saturday, which means that for the next week, the Kosher Pastry Oven in Silver Spring will be packed with customers waiting in line for jelly doughnuts.
For all you gentiles like Y&H, the tradition of eating fried jelly doughnuts (or sufganiyot) during Hanukkah is tied to the original miracle of the menorah: oil that was supposed to last only one day burned for eight.
As good as the Kosher Pastry Oven’s doughnuts look, they don’t compare to these artistic beauties sold at the Doughnut Plant in New York City:
