French president Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife, former supermodel Carla Bruni, dropped all pretense to haute cuisine this afternoon and dropped by Ben’s Chili Bowl, the home of the famous half-smoke and PR-damaged politicians everywhere.
But what exactly did Sarkozy and Bruni eat while at Ben’s?
The Washington Post reported that the president and first lady had a “chili burger and a half-smoke,” while Sarkozy’s son from a previous marriage ordered a burger.
The New York Times had a far different telling of the French couple’s surprise visit, according to Doris Pollard, the Ben’s manager who tended to the pair:
The Sarkozys, accompanied by Mr. Sarkozy’s two sons by a previous marriage, had — get this — two half smokes each.
What? You’re saying Carla Bruni ate two hot dogs for lunch?
“She finished her first one and ordered another one,” said an adamant Ms. Pollard.
And she ate the second one?
“They were both real hungry, I think.”
As if you needed another source, TMZ reported that Sarkozy ordered a chili dog, fries, and a Coke, while Bruni opted for a turkey burger, which she apparently didn’t eat. The president reportedly left a C-note as tip.
Y&H has made calls to clear up this confusion. You think it’s silly? Excuse me, but when the president of France, home to a codified gastronomy that has influenced the world’s cuisine, wanders into Ben’s Chili Bowl, I really want to know what he orders.
More as I know it.
