Two years after they launched their successful Columbia Heights pizzeria, the owners of Pete’s Apizza are set to open a second store on Wednesday, June 16, in a former consignment shop at 4940 Wisconsin Ave. NW.
Well, actually, the new Pete’s will occupy two former storefronts on Wisconsin Avenue, all the better to meet your New Haven pie needs. The section located at 4940 Wisconsin will be the main, nearly 100-seat dining room, decorated much like the one in Columbia Heights, with photos of Tuscany, Naples, and the Amalfi coast. It will more than double the size of the original Pete’s.
The menu, too, will largely duplicate the one rolled out at the first location, offering pizza, antipasti, and panini. Because of the larger space, though, you can expect the pizza-by-the-slice options to expand. Look for more al forno dishes, too, says co-owner Mike Wilkinson as well as more draft beer offerings. The new Pete’s will double the number of beer taps to eight, although the selections have not yet been finalized. If it’s anything like the beer menu in Columbia Heights, expect a balanced mix of European imports and American microbrews.
The other half of the new Pete’s Apizza, located at 4938 Wisconsin, will house a take-out operation. Four shiny new Bakers Pride deck ovens have been installed to handle orders from both the dining room and the take-away shop.
The six Pete’s owners are also working to open a third location dedicated to New Haven-style pies, which should go a long way toward breaking the stranglehold that Naples has on our current pizza culture.
