This just in: President Obama, fresh off firing his commander in Afghanistan, stopped at Ray’s Hell Burger with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. The crowd gave the two presidents a standing ovation, says owner Michael Landrum, who was there for the surprise visit.

“It happened in a blink of an eye,” Landrum tells Y&H. “No advance warning.”

Obama ordered a cheddar cheeseburger “with no specification for any type of mustard,” says Landrum, referencing the ridiculous Dijon Gate scandal after the president’s trip last year to Hell Burger. Landrum couldn’t hear what else Obama requested for his burger, or what temperature the commander in chief wanted it cooked to.

The Russian president “spiced it up,” Landrum says. Medvedev ordered a burger with jalapenos, mushrooms, and onions. Well, actually Obama ordered the burger for Medvedev after a consultation.

In all, the two presidents stayed just long enough to eat their burgers, although Obama did shake hands and greet a few soldiers who happened to be dining at Ray’s at the same time, Landrum says.

Today’s visit marks the second time President Obama has stopped at the Arlington burger joint. In May 2009, he and vice president Joe Biden hit Ray’s for a pair of medium-well burgers. Their visit last year inspired Jon Stewart to ridicule the president’s ordering technique and also forced Landrum to expand his operation.
