In scanning through the local businesses for sale on Craigslist, I stumbled upon this strange and sad item for an Adams Morgan eatery:

Adams Morgan upscale Pizza/Pasta Restaurant and Lounge with full ABC – $285000 (18th ST NW)

Three years old. Beautiful build out, almost new equipment. Two story with outdoor dining on deck. Very friendly and honest, hardworking staff. Very real turn-key operation and ideal situation for a new operator or for expansion for existing operator to re-locate to a very vibrant and upscale DC neighborhood famous for it’s international fare and nightlife. for a fraction of the cost of opening from scratch.

Family tragedy forces sale

Sometimes I hate my own curiosity, particularly when family tragedy is involved, but I wanted to learn more about this.

I made a few quick calls and learned the restaurant is Pi Pizzeria at 2309 18th St NW. The operation has been under the management of Bill Duggan and his team at Madam’s Organ since December, not long after Pi owner Alireza “Haji” Hajaligholi lost his wife. Hajaligholi has had to focus his attention on his two daughters, one of whom suffers from Down Syndrome.

“It’s not a good fit for us,” says Duggan on the phone this afternoon. “But it’s perfect for someone else.”
