This DCist post on unlicensed mobile meat sellers—”[s]elling meat out of the back of a van is certainly a little strange,” for sure—got me thinking back to a visit to an unauthorized “restaurant” in a Mexican lady’s apartment earlier this year where I was able to get some great tacos and tamales, complete with some cooling horchata drinks, black-and-white Spanish-language cinema, and a bi-lingual menu.

If you’ve been to such a taco speakeasy, I’d be interested to hear your stories and your impressions of the food you’ve been served. I’m not going to disclose the location of the one I’ve been to. (It’s in the District, but not located in Ward 3!) Maybe there are more taco speakeasy joints than I’m aware of? E-mail me here.
