Schools are closed, so those of you who went into the noble field of education have been rewarded with a day off (and rightly so). But as we all found out early this morning, no, the federal government is not closed. Most of us get a few extra hours but still have to report to work. A local bar is trying to dissuade anyone from doing anything but drinking beer today.
Meridian Pint in Columbia Heights announced yesterday that if the feds closed, they would open at 10:00 a.m. and pour a host of big, boozy beers to help take the edge off the winter chill. Well, they got so excited about the idea they decided to do it despite OPM’s disappointing decision.
All day long (and many of the beers will last awhile, so likely all night tonight and tomorrow the next day…) Meridian Pint will be pouring nearly 20 beers with an alcohol content of 9 percent or more. Sound intimidating? You can get small 4 oz. tasting pours of most of the drafts if the thought of downing an entire pint (or two or three) of such strong beer makes you nervous.
They will also be serving some brunch items, so it might be a good idea to take a personal day and trudge toward the bar instead of the office. You deserve a snow day. (At least Meridian Pint thinks so.)
