Outback Steakhouse’s Bloomin’ Onion is a true award-winner. It’s constantly listed near the top of the rankings of the worst and fattiest foods on the planet. WebMD named it one of ten “health horrors” with  “800 calories, 58 grams of fat and 22 grams of saturated fat, plus 1,520 milligrams of sodium.”

Well, we might have found a local rendition to scare you to run right across the street to Washington Sports Club. (No, really, the gym is right across the street.)

Behold, the onion loaf at Lou’s City Bar. Sliced onions get a quick dunk in buttermilk and a light lager, then “dredged in flour, spiced with oregano, salt and pepper, placed in a basket and deep fried,” explains Mike Stokes, bar and personnel manager at the Columbia Heights sports bar. The flash-fried mound keeps its unique loaf shape because it’s pressed into a smaller-than-normal basket.

With a dipping sauce of Cajun- and paprika-flavored mayonnaise, this heaping bundle of cholesterol becomes drenched in even more calories.

Although Young & Hungry did not perform a test-kitchen experiment to compare with the numbers on the Australian-themed national chain’s version, we’re still nominating the probable cardiologist’s nightmare for inclusion among the District’s most intense deep-fried dishes.
