Quick Feeding: When Po' Boys Are Not Priced for the Poor

Poor Boy? On today’s dining chat at Washingtonian, Todd Kliman takes a closer look at Bayou and notes that Rusty Holman‘s po’ boys are, well, expensive. “The po’ would be hard-put to come up with the change to eat any one of these, however. The cost at dinner is $17; even with two good sides (I’d opt for the dirty rice and the collards), that’s a helluva lot to pay for a sandwich.” Granted it is a mighty fine po’ boy! A few days ago, Y&H devoured the Royal po’ boy, a sandwich with New Orleans-style barbecue shrimp…priced at $19.95. In non-po’ boy assessments, the notoriously hard-to-please Kliman said he was surprised “that the gumbo isn’t better—it lacks depth and character.” The Washington Post‘s Tom Sietsema, who recently gave Bayou a respectable two stars, said the gumbo lacks a certain “depth of flavor.” Of course, if you ask some particular Cajuns, gumbo should look like bayou water. Y&H has not yet tasted Bayou’s gumbo, but we agree with Kliman’s assessment of the “well-made Sazerac.” [Washingtonian, WaPo, Y&H]

Wither McCormick & Schmick’s? Just as the board of directors for McCormick & Schmick’s “has authorized a sale process of the company,” the future of the chain’s Bethesda location is up in the air. (Its space is currently up for rent.) “It’s too soon to know whether the company will be sold, or if and when the Bethesda location will shutter.
