It appears that New York lemming-magnet Magnolia Bakery (pictured) will be getting some new competition in the most ridiculously longest-line-for-a-cupcake department: D.C.’s own tourist trap Georgetown Cupcake is exporting its high-profile brand of tiny frosted cakes to the Big Apple.
Celebrity cupcake-making sisters Sophie LaMontagne and Katherine Kallinis announced today the opening of their third location—the first outside the D.C. area—situated along the already congested sidewalks of New York’s trendy SoHo neighborhood. 111 Mercer Street, to be exact. Anticipated opening date: Winter 2011.
“It has always been a dream of ours to bring our cupcakes to New York,” LaMontagne said in an email from a publicist for the TLC network, which broadcasts the sisters’ reality TV show DC Cupcakes. “Like Washington, it’s a city that we both love very much and spend so much time in.” Sister Kallinis adds, “finding the perfect location was a long process, but we are thrilled to be opening in SoHo which has the same charming neighborhood feel that we looked for in our Georgetown and Bethesda locations.”
According to the email, a special one-hour episode of DC Cupcakes, featuring “behind-the-scenes action” of the new SoHo opening, will appear on the TLC network in late 2011.
