The Summer Fancy Food Show, the largest specialty food and beverage trade show on the entire continent, descends on the Washington Convention Center, beginning on Sunday, July 10, and continuing through Tuesday, July 12. The hugely ballyhooed event features some 2,400 vendors hawking some 180,000 products—many of them holding claim to some new earth-shattering, mouth-watering innovation.
One company, for example, will be unveiling its “bacon croutons,” billed as “the single most important development in salad flavor technology since Robert H. Cobb added bacon and eggs to a late night salad at the Hollywood Brown Derby in the 1930’s, thereby creating the world’s first ‘Cobb Salad.'”
A bold statement—even for a concept as bulletproof as bacon-flavored anything.
Back in May, Y&H contributor Stefanie Gans highlighted a trio of regional vendors who will be showing-off their wares at the annual eats extravaganza: Todd Courtney of Severna Park, Md., whose “Crabby Dirt” seasoning takes aim at Old Bay’s crown as king of crustacean spice; Dr. David Heilbronner and Dr. Bruce Wilhelmsen of Charlottesville, Va., makers of Bone Doctors’ BBQ Sauce; and Route 11 Potato Chips, based in Mount Jackson, Va., but which apparently started out of D.C.’s own Tabard Inn.
