Chalk up another shutout for Barracks Row burritos. Last night, “fast casual” chain Chipotle scored the unanimous approval of the full Advisory Neighborhood Commission 6B in its quest for a special exemption to 8th Street SE’s prohibition on fast food restaurants. During the meeting, Chipotle rep Teddy Ferguson verbally committed to satisfying the noise concerns of the restaurant’s neighbors on adjacent 7th Street SE—reassurance that helped quell any lingering concerns held by the assembled ANC commissioners.
The ANC also took the unusual step of asking the D.C. Board of Zoning Adjustment, which will decide the fate of Chipotle’s request on July 19, to extend the fast-food exemption only to Chipotle and not to subsequent tenants. It’s not entirely clear why this extra layer of assurance is necessary, though perhaps Chipotle’s neighbors find burrito bowls served in slick digs less threatening than other bowls.
