Veteran food critic Robert Sietsema (oddly, no relation to WaPo‘s Tom) has posted some hurricane survival tips for those who want to eat well even during a natural disaster such as the impending Irene. Among the items that the other Sietsema recommends: canned tuna packed in oil (“since you can dump it on boiled pasta”), canned asparagus (“one thing that tastes good right out of the can”), dried sausages like soppressatta (“keep very well unrefrigerated”), as well as drier cheeses that can survive without refrigeration, such as sharp cheddar and parmigiano reggiano. “Velveeta? Maybe. Pretty sure that can’t go bad,” he notes. Oh, and water. Don’t forget the water. Nothing says riding out the storm in style like tall bottles of Perrier.
