There’s a reason that chef Jeff Tunks hung his cast iron farm bell more than six feet and five inches off the kitchen floor inside his glassy new eatery District Commons in Foggy Bottom. “I’m the only one who can reach it,” Tunks says.

The towering toque rang the bell publicly for the first time on Friday during the restaurant’s opening night. The loud claaaaang is set to occur most nights at 10 p.m. (Sundays at 9 p.m.) when Tunks announces the evening family meal. Customers are invited to join in the communal fare, priced at $12 per person. The family meal changes daily. Thursdays, for instance, will be “TenPenh Night,” when the kitchen whips up Tunks’ former restaurant‘s notable Thai bento box. On Friday, the staff dined on papusas (photographed below).
