Last week, Y&H reported that Sax restaurant’s staggering collection of 70 different varieties of sparkling wine, once thought to be the largest in the District, was recently leapfrogged by Marcel’s, which now boasts more than 100 labels of champagne and other bubblies.

Contacted for comment, Sax sommelier Andrew Stover responds via email:

“That is exciting for Ramon and Marcel’s to boast such a large selection of Champagne.
We are still holding true to our original vision of showcasing an eclectic collection of sparkling wines (not just Champagne) with an emphasis on diversity, local and unusual sparklers. The menu is still around 70 selections with roughly 10 offerings by the glass…ranging from sparkling sake to sparkling pineapple wine.
The wine list at Sax is certainly not in competition with Marcel’s or any restaurant for that matter.  Having 2 great wine lists with extensive sparkling wine options is exciting news for DC bubble-heads. Not to mention Sax and Marcel’s arent the only spots with great sparkling options. Proof is certainly known for its sparkling wine program and Champagne cart and Poste at Hotel Monaco has an extensive  grower/small boutique Champagne program.”
