My Sundays used to be all about bottomless mimosa brunch. But a few months back, I discovered sausages on Sundays at Dodge City on U Street NW, and it’s become a new staple of my weekend routine. I tell you this begrudgingly; Dodge on a Sunday afternoon is modestly quiet and never has a wait at the bar. It’s one of those spots that I can’t wait to tell people about, but fear will become too popular and lose its charm.
The grill is what makes it one of the best spots in town to kick back on a lazy Sunday. The menu features a slew of sausages from 13th Street Meats, including Thai chicken, chorizo, roasted poblano, the traditional half-smoke, and—my personal favorite—the lemon-basil chicken.
The $8 dogs come on a bun with chili, peppers and onions, or cheese (or all three). If you’re partial to a slathering of mustard or hot sauce on your brat, well, you have options. There are at least 20 bottles of sauces to choose from. These sausages are filling enough alone, but they also come with a choice of chips or no-frills homemade potato salad. (I would opt for the latter.)
I suggest pairing your sausage with a Racer 5 IPA and grabbing a spot on the garden patio. The grill is fired up from 1-10 p.m. on Sundays, but the sausages are also available Monday through Thursday from 6 to 10 p.m. (and sometimes later). Do me a favor: Skip the bottomless brunch and sample a few of these dogs, but please, don’t go all at once.
