It was a chilly afternoon, but step inside some establishments and you’ll find D.C. feeling unusually tropical. Hoping to pay homage to Barack Obama‘s Hawaiian roots, bars and restaurants are throwing pineapple and coconut all over their food and drink menus. Here are some places where you can celebrate the inauguration while pretending you’re wearing (or actually wearing?) a grass hula skirt:
Jack Rose Dining Saloon is hosting an inauguration luau beginning at 6 p.m. There will be a “tiki pig roast” as well as a Kona Brewery tap takeover. Hula dancers will shake their hips, and the Tiki Bar will serve rum cocktails out of fresh pineapples and coconuts. And yes, there will be Spam in the form of sliders.
At Marcel’s, chef Robert Wiedmaier will serve a Haiian Onaga “Obama” Snapper with snap pea risotto and ginger sesame pea tendrils. It’s $40 as an entree or $20 as an appetizer.
Cashion’s Eat Place is offering a special three-course menu tonight that includes tuna poke and Hawaiian pineapple upside down cake (as well as dry-aged beef strip loin). It’s $40.13 with optional wine pairings for $20.13.
Firefly‘s “Chicago Fizz” cocktail includes Hawiian Koloa dark rum, ruby port, lime, egg white, and soda for $13 or $7.50 during late night happy hour (11 p.m. to close).
Poste Moderne Brasserie has Kona Brewing Pipeline Porter for $6.
Urbana Restaurant & Wine Bar has Hawaiian punch with dark rum, light rum, pineapple juice, white grape juice, Amaro Averna, and house-made clove bitters for $12 or $8 during happy hour.
Tryst has an entire tiki bar-inspired inauguration drink menu, including a Dark and Stormy, Mai Tai, and Navy Cider—all $7. Sister restaurant The Coupe also has the $6 Hawaiian-inspired “Obama-rama” cocktail with pineapple and Sailor Jerry spiced rum over crushed ice.
Also, don’t forget about Hogo, where you can find spider bowls, rum drinks, and Hawaiian diner food galore.
