Think a $14 cocktail is expensive? How about three for $1,500?
Friday and Saturday mark the 10th anniversary of the the Antwerp Diamond Heist, in which $100 million worth of gems and gold were stolen from the Antwerp Diamond Centre in Belgium and never recovered. To commemorate the “heist of the century,” swanky D.C. nightclub Heist is hosting an Oceans Eleven-style soiree and selling “three-piece” $1,500 cocktails. That’s about the same amount you’d spend eating at Minibar six times.
The reason it’s so expensive? There’s a loose diamond as well as Jay-Z-backed Armand de Brignac Champagne involved. The Champagne, better known as “Ace of Spades,” goes for $1,000 a bottle at Heist.
Mixologist Kris Carr of Keystone Hospitality, which has been consulting with Heist on its drink menu, will prepare the $1,500 sips, which consist of three parts. The flight starts with a “palate cleanser” of Ace of Spades sorbet and fresh grapefruit segments. Next up is a cocktail with Remy Martin XO Cognac, white fig jam, chocolate bitters, and a ripe fig garnish that nestles a clean cut diamond from local jeweler Kevin Riahi. (The Remy XO costs $65 a shot at Heist.) That’s topped off with a glass of Ace of Spades chilled with frozen Champagne grapes.
“If I was a diamond thief, that’s what I’d drink after a score,” Carr says. A portion of the proceeds will go to D.C.-based charity Wake Up and Dream Foundation.
If you can afford such extravagance, there’s just one warning: Don’t swallow the diamond. You don’t want the Antwerp jewels to be the only ones that were never recovered.
