City Paper is not for tourists
Dolci Gelati owner Gianluigi Dellaccio, a former pastry chef for Roberto Donna‘s Galileo, sells his gelato at Whole Foods, Nationals Stadium, and other retail outlets and restaurants. Now, he’s opening his first shops in Takoma Park and Shaw.
The 500-square-foot Takoma Park location at 7000 Carroll Ave. will open in the next two or three weeks. A 1,200-square-foot shop at the CityMarket at O development in Shaw is on track to open in spring of 2014.
Dellaccio tells Y&H that the cafes will not only feature gelato, but Segafredo coffee, pastries, and baked goods. The Takoma Park location will offer about a dozen gelato flavors, which will be made fresh daily. Dellaccio has more than 250 flavors in his arsenal that he plans to rotate in and out.
Also expect to find “cupcake cones”—waffle cones filled with cupcake batter and chocolate ganache centers—as well as several varieties of kettle corn (bacon, cotton candy, parmesan) and gelato sundaes to go. Dellaccio, a former professional water polo player in Italy, plans to put his pastry background to use even more at the larger CityMarket location with homemade gelato popsicles, semifreddo desserts, and other pastries.
