Filibuster Bourbon was initially looking to open a distillery of its own in the District. But now, Sid Dilawri, who also owns of Modern Liquors across from the Convention Center, tells Y&H that his family is finalizing a deal to buy a warehouse for the distillery in Maurertown, Va., in Shenandoah County.
Filibuster currently blends bourbon from a distillery in Kentucky, meaning it ages the alcohol but does not produce it. Dilawri says he hopes Filibuster will be able to start its own distilling by the end of August. While it will take at least four years to complete the first original batch, the Virginia locale will bring in existing barrels so it has the finished product on site. The plan is to have a tasting room, too.
Filibuster is already available at several bars and retailers in D.C., Maryland, and seven other states.
