Yuppies dine in Dupont, hipsters hang on U Street NW and H Street NE, and frat boys frequent Adams Morgan and south Dupont.
These are some of the obvious revelations of Wordmap, a new heat map tool created by Yelp. The tool lets you search 15 keywords—cheap, hangover, pasta, romantic—then shows you where geographically those words show up the most in Yelp reviews. In addition to D.C., there are also maps for 13 other major cities in the U.S. and Europe.
The maps seem to be pretty spot on. The word “pricey” highlights Dupont, Georgetown, and Penn Quarter. “Hangover” reveals a giant red blob over Adams Morgan. And “tourist” hones in on areas around the National Mall. However, I’m still trying to figure out what’s going on in Penn Quarter that’s making so many people talk about bacon.
Play around with the tool for yourself here.
