Booze geeks and ice cream sandwich fanatics, prepare yourselves. This weekend, Red Apron Butcher at Union Market will debut a Fernet Branca ice cream sandwich.
The herbaceous Italian spirit, which has gained a strong following among bar industry folks, is infused into ice cream, which is then smushed between two lime-glazed ginger cookies. Neighborhood Restaurant Group meat man Nate Anda and pastry chef Tiffany MacIsaac concocted the dessert, which is a play on the Eva Perón, a cocktail with Fernet Branca, sweet vermouth, ginger liqueur, ginger beer, and lime juice.
The ice cream sandwich is $6, but for $12, you can pick up a half pint of Fernet Branca ice cream and six ginger cookies and make sandwiches yourself at home.
The Fernet Branca ice cream sandwich will likely only be around this weekend, but Anda says he plans to offer similar boozy ice cream sandwiches at the Penn Quarter location of Red Apron, opening at 709 D St. NW this fall.
