Former Hill Country Barbecue pitmaster Rob Sonderman is now slinging smoked meats out of a carryout called DCity Smokehouse in Bloomingdale.
The carryout is housed inside Revive Events & Catering’s facility at 8 Florida Ave. NW. The owners of Revive used to have another carryout serving things like chicken and waffles and fried fish platters there, but they closed it over a year ago because they didn’t have anyone dedicated to the space. Sonderman, who lives in the neighborhood, came on board about a couple months ago and reopened the spot as a barbecue destination last Friday.
On the menu, you’ll find a number of sandwiches: brisket with crispy fried onions, smoked pulled pork with creamy red chile slaw, crispy catfish with house-made remoulade, shrimp po’ boys, burgers, and more. Other house specialties include meat platters with chopped meat and pork ribs, pit-smoked wings, and a fried seafood platter. Hush puppies, smoky brisket chili, house-made pickles, and green chile cheddar grits are available as sides. (Check out the full menu below.)
Sonderman says everything is smoked on site with hickory and cherrywood. The pitmaster is a D.C. native but says his mom’s side of the family is from central Texas and his dad’s side is from the St. Louis area, so his barbecue alliances are split. “My style is just a conglomeration of everything I enjoy,” Sonderman says. Prior to getting into barbecue, Sonderman attended the Culinary Institute of America and worked in some fine dining restaurants, including an externship at Bistro Bis and a stint as a cook at Craigie on Main in Boston.
While the barbecue spot is primarily a to-go destination (and also offers catering), there are five seats. DCity Smokehouse is currently open from 12 to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
