The Sandwich: The Queen Lane
Where: Taylor Gourmet, multiple locations
Bread: White sesame roll
Stuffings: Eggs, spicy Italian sausage, broccoli rabe, sweet provolone
Thickness: 3 inches
Sloppiness Level (1 to 5): 3. The main requirement of a good breakfast sandwich is an egg with runny yolks; luckily, or maybe not, the Queen Lane has runniness to spare. Expect the yellow goo to ooze all over the foil, the plate, and your hands.
Pros: You might think broccoli rabe wouldn’t play well with eggs and sausage. You’d be wrong: The garlicky green counters the dense protein-and-cheese combination, adding a little bit of a crunch and a whole lot of fancy.
Cons: So. Much. Salt. Breakfast meats are always salty, but when you combine two big slices of sausage with a salty cheese, preseasoned eggs, and the rabe, the result tastes like a mouthful of ocean. Set aside plenty of water for instant desalination.
Overall Score (1 to 5): 2. While it’s nice that Taylor Gourmet offers breakfast hoagies at all times of day now (earlier this summer, they scrapped the eggy offerings altogether), the Queen Lane will send you into sodium overload. Opt for any of Taylor’s spicy, meatier sandwiches, and you’ll be much more content.
