Sorry, folks, Japanese cocktail spot Kiji Club isn’t happening after all. The owners of Daikaya were going to open the bar in the basement space at 600 F St. NW, just a block from their ramen shop and izakaya. They even started the buildout. But according to co-owner Daisuke Utagawa, they’ve decided not to continue with the venture.
Utagawa explains that after seeing the way the Daikaya bar has developed, the team began to question how Kiji Club would really be much different. After all, Daikaya already has a strong cocktail program and every Japanese whiskey they could get their hands on.
Utagawa says they haven’t yet decided whether to put a different concept in the space or to turn the lease over to someone else.
In other Daikaya news, beverage director Eddie Kim has left the restaurant. He’s been replaced by Lukas Smith, who’s been a bartender at Daikaya several months and previously worked at A&D bar.
