There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
The super grilled cheese has arrived on the West End. Logan Circle’s Stoney’s opens its second, more modern location at 2101 L St. NW today at 11 a.m.
The menu is 80-85 percent the same as the other location, including burgers, sandwiches, and pizzas. Among the new items: Sriracha honey lime wings, Baja fish tacos, some additional grilled cheeses, plus steaks to appeal to the neighborhood’s business crowd. (Check out the full menu below.)
The restaurant has a large bar area, with outlets and USB ports beneath the counter. There are 24 beers on draft, at least 14 bottles and cans, and around 20 wines available. Cocktails also get a little more attention at the West End location. Bar manager Ben Park has a simple list with four classic cocktails and a gin and whiskey rickey. Look out for happy hour specials soon, plus a possible late-night happy hour.
The centerpiece of the dining room is a wall-length mural showing Stoney’s storefronts over the decades, beginning with its old 1307 L St. NW location, which opened in 1968. Superimposed in front of the buildings are pandas, modern presidents (from Richard Nixon through George W. Bush), and one protestor with a sign that reads “Don’t Stop Eating Great Pizza Not Tomorrow Not Next Year Not Ever.” Owner Tony Harris can also be seen lurking in the background, along with cook Freddie Guzman, who’s been working for the restaurant for more than 30 years.
Stoney’s is open for lunch and dinner for now, but brunch and weekday breakfast are also in the works.
