Jersey Shore–style sandwich shop Jersey Mike’s Subs opens its first D.C. location at Rhode Island Row development in Brentwood today.
The local Jersey Mike’s franchise (no relation to New Jersey native Mike Isabella) will be run by Sean Schoonover, who was born and raised in College Park. Schoonover started his food-industry career at Dominos, working his way up to manager and then overseeing manager and franchisee training for Jersey Mike’s. Last April at the age of 25, he raised the money to open his own Jersey Mike’s franchise, and now he’s helping the company to eventually bring 140 stories to the Washington area. (There are currently 19 in Virginia and Maryland, but none in the District.)
Jersey Mike’s menu includes cold and hot subs, plus wraps and “Sub in a Tub”—all the sub toppings without any bread. Among the offerings: chicken parm, grilled pastrami Reuben, Philly cheese steak, club sub, and roast beef with provolone. The roast beef is cooked medium rare in-house, but the meats, cheese, and breads are shipped each day from New Jersey distributors.
To kick things off from Dec. 18-22, Jersey Mike’s will give away free subs to patrons who give a dollar or more to non-profit Powerful Beyond Measure and bring in a coupon available at teamwashington.com.
