There are plenty of places to pop bubbly or splurge on 10-course meals to ring in the new year, and many of them will charge you at least $100. If unlimited tacos and really great cocktails are more your style, check out our top-five picks for bars and restaurants to count down the last seconds of 2013.
2 Birds 1 Stone
1800 14th St. NW
For something a little more low key where you’re guaranteed to drink well, head to one of the best new cocktail bars in town: 2 Birds 1 Stone. Bar manager Adam Bernbach will dedicate the entire (hand-drawn) menu to Champagne cocktails (all $16) plus a Cava, rum, and honey punch ($10).
Hogo and The Passenger
1017 and 1021 7th St. NW
Did someone say taco bar? Hogo and The Passenger are co-hosting a party between the two spaces and Warehouse Theatre. Cover is $10 after 9 p.m. and includes a midnight Champagne toast, late-night taco bar, DJ, and party hats.
3313 11th St. NW
OK, maybe we’re really craving tacos, but El Chucho has a pretty good deal. For $45, the Columbia Heights restaurant will offer an order of chips and salsa for the table, elote callejero (street corn), all-you-can-eat tacos, and all-you-can-drink well drinks, draft beers, and draft and frozen margaritas. Bonus: a glass of sparkling wine, hats, and noise makers for midnight. El Chucho doesn’t normally have a TV, but there will be one on New Years Eve so you can watch the ball drop in Time Square. Festivities begin at 9 p.m.
1323 Connecticut Ave. NW
If your New Years resolution is to lose 10 pounds, you better eat the Luther fried chicken doughnut sandwich while you still can. Beginning at 8 p.m., the Dupont restaurant will celebrate with soul music and soul food, including jalapeño hush puppies, andouille dogs, fried chicken, doughnuts, and more (yes, the Luther). Neighborhood Restaurant Group’s new cocktail hire Jeff Faile has some specialty punches in store, too. It’s a cash bar, but the $10 cover includes a complimentary toast at midnight.
2047 9th St. NW
The restaurant and bar behind 9:30 Club will provide a Champagne toast at midnight, punk-rock tunes from DJ Tara Robles, food specials until 2 a.m. Also: alcoholic milkshakes. No cover.
