The most expensive restaurant in Washington has raised its price again. A 25-plus course meal at José Andrés’ Minibar now costs $250 excluding tax, tip, and drink pairings, which can soar to an additional $200. That’s nearly four times the price in 2003, when Minibar opened with six counter seats on the third floor of Andrés’ since-closed Penn Quarter nuevo Latin restaurant Café Atlántico. The biggest jump—a 50 percent increase—occurred when the restaurant relocated to its own space with 12 seats at 855 E St. NW in 2012. To hear Andrés tell it, however, throwing down multiple Benjamins is a bargain when dinner includes, say, foie gras–filled “rubber duckies” or clams with gel-encapsulated liquid beans. “The controversies about price, I don’t get it,” he told Eater last year. “I subsidize Minibar, how much I charge, I subsidize everything. What I charge doesn’t pay for what it cost.”
