The Dish: Sadie’s fried matzo balls with sauteed onions

Price: $6.50

Where to Get It: Star and Shamrock, 1341 H St. NE; (202) 388-3833; starandshamrock.com

What It Is: Juicy matzo balls halved and pan-fried with sauteed onions, served with a house-made chicken dipping broth.

What It Tastes Like: Home-fried potatoes with a more mealy texture. Firm, golden brown, and crispy, these dumplings are marinated in chicken broth before frying for maximum flavor.

The Story: These aren’t your Bubbie’s matzo balls. They’re owner Jay Feldman’s. Feldman’s Orthodox Jewish grandmother Sadie used to fry matzo balls after Passover, which is why this sentimental dish made it to Star and Shamrock’s New York-style deli meets Irish pub menu.

How to Eat It: Dip it in the au “Jew,” naturally.
