The finalists for the James Beard awards are in, and it’s not D.C.’s strongest year. Out of the 18 D.C.-area chefs and restaurants in nine categories that made the long list in February, only two were named as finalists. Rasika‘s Vikram Sunderam and Restaurant Eve‘s Cathal Armstrong are both in the running for Best Chef Mid-Atlantic. Also somewhat local: Baltimore chefs Spike Gjerde of Woodberry Kitchen and Cindy Wolf of Charleston, who are a finalist in the same category.*
This is the fourth nomination for Sunderam, the third for Gjerde, and the eighth(!) for Armstrong, who’s been a finalist every year since 2007 but has never won. Could this be his year? The winners will be recognized May 5 in New York.

UPDATE: In the media categories, Washingtonian is a nominee for food coverage in a general-interest publication. The Post’s Eli Saslow, Tamar Haspel, and Monica Hesse also received nominations.
