Discovering the tables at Rose’s Luxury have menu cubbies is like discovering your favorite dress has pockets. After ordering on a recent visit, a server pointed out the under-the-table slots so we could hang on to our menus without crowding our dishes. The tables were custom-made by chef/owner Aaron Silverman‘s uncle (son of Rose, Silverman’s grandmother and the restaurant’s namesake), but the cubbies were added later. I’m surprised more restaurants don’t do this. But it turns out, the Barracks Row restaurant is not completely alone in its hidden table nooks. Here are some others:
No need to wait for a server to bring spoons, chopsticks, and napkins at Annandale Korean barbecue joint Kogiya. A pullout drawer has all the utensils you need. Bonus points: You can also open up your stool and put your coat inside so it doesn’t smell like smoked meat.
Wine-centric Proof in Penn Quarter wants to make sure diners have plenty of room for their Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. A handy table extension slides out from the booths, making it easy for the sommelier to pour glasses of wine and for you to drink without knocking over a bottle while reaching for some housemade pâté.
