The rare bird known as Attorney General Irv Nathan appeared today at Mayor Vince Gray’s news conference.
Nathan was there to give some details about why he’s had to drop 50 drunk driving cases (Did you know: urine tests costs 10 times as much as breathalyzers?) since taking office. The Examiner’s Freeman Klopott officially owns that story, so LL will direct interested parties here for details.
LL was more interested in trying to get some info out of Nathan about his ongoing investigation of Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr.‘ s Team Thomas, which is some sort of organization that has sold baseball lessons, given away Thanksgiving turkeys, paid for Thomas’ trips to Vegas and Florida and received funding from District taxpayers and companies with business before the city.
LL didn’t get much—Nathan’s official line is that he doesn’t comment on ongoing investigations—but the new A.G. did say that he believes (and “hopes”) the investigation will conclude sometime this spring. Let’s hope it does because as it sits now, the public’s almost entirely in the dark as to which business interests may have given more than $200,000 since 2008 to the head of council’s powerful economic development committee. That is the opposite of transparent.
Of course, there’s always the possibility that Thomas might release details of Team Thomas’ funding and spending on his own. After all, he’s been promising to do so since last year.
