Mayor Vince Gray just signed off from a mostly sleepy interview on Newstalk with Bruce DePuyt. The only real lively part of the interview was when DePuyt asked about Ward 8 Councilmember Marion Barry‘s hold up of city funds for security upgrades at the city’s juvenile detention facility, New Beginnings. Gray expressed frustration with the council’s micro managing ways (he should talk!) and befuddlement as to why several councilmembers seem to hate Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services Director Neil Stanley.
Barry and Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham voted against Stanley’s confirmation in a committee vote—in part because of questions of his hiring of a Coast Guard friend to run New Beginnings—but the full council allowed Stanley’s confirmation.
So far, the spat over Stanley has been Gray’s most visible rift with Barry. The question is whether it goes anywhere.
