Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich may want to have campaign staffers update the ol’ fundraising email list, which is currently asking one of the District’s leading gay rights advocates (and delegate to the Ward 3 Democrats) for money.
Shortly after Gingrich’s big win in South Carolina, an email asking for a donation founds its way into the inbox of ANC 3F07 Commissioner Bob Summersgill, in his city-maintained ANC account.
“Dear Conservative,” the email began, before asking Summersgill for cash to help Gingrich win the Republican nomination.
“As I write this, Barack Obama and the Democrats are raising thousands of dollars per hour, waiting for a Republican nominee to emerge,” the email continued. “He’s a radical, secular socialist who wants to reinvent America in the image of the faded, decrepit Republics of Western Europe.”
For the record, Summersgill, who was one of the leading proponents of the District’s marriage equality law and is active in the city’s Democratic establishment, says he’s unmoved by Gingrich’s plea and doesn’t plan to vote for him. “Gingrich said gay people shouldn’t support him,” emails Summersgill, likely referring to this exchange. “He said we should vote for Obama.”
