Former At-Large Councilmember Michael Brown pleaded guilty to a bribery charge in federal court today, a decision that could put him in prison for 37 months under a deal he struck with prosecutors.

Between July 2012 and March 2013, Brown accepted $55,000 in bribes from undercover FBI agents posing a businessmen hoping to get official recognition as a Certified Business Enterprise. Brown took the money in several ways—in one case, in a Washington Pigskins coffee mug.

Besides the prison time, Brown also faces three years of supervised release under the agreement he struck with prosecutors. Brown’s sentencing hearing is set for Oct. 3, with the date chosen so Brown’s mother could attend the proceeding between her dialysis treatments. U.S. District Judge Robert Wilkins, who released Brown without bond, warned him to expect to start his sentence immediately after he receives it in October.

Brown is cooperating with authorities in at least one other investigation, according to prosecutors.

Brown declined to comment to the press, but his attorney Brian Heberlig did. “This will not be the final chapter for Michael Brown,” Heberlig told reporters.
