Hey, remember Marion Barry? Four-term mayor turned Ward 8 councilmember, took $6,800 in gifts from city contractors? The fight over the Large Retailer Accountability Act has made it hard to keep track of the mayor-for-life’s latest ethics mess, but he’ll be back in the news Monday, when the D.C. Council committee that was created to decide what to do with Barry releases its findings.
Committee chairman Kenyan McDuffie tells LL that his ad hoc committee, which also includes Anita Bonds, David Grosso, Yvette Alexander, and Mary Cheh, will meet Council Chair Phil Mendelson‘s deadline to release the report by Tuesday’s first Council session.
The committee could recommend that the full Council vote to censure, reprimand, or expel Barry, though that last option is unlikely. Barry could also lose control of his Committee on Workforce and Community Affairs, which covers a hodgepodge of issues including parks, gay rights, and, ironically, Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs.
He’s already been fined $13,600 by the Board of Ethics and Government Affairs for taking the money, which he reportedly needed in part to pay his bills.
