A surprise loss in last Saturday’s Ward 8 Democrats straw poll turned out to be the last hurrah for one Vince Gray campaign staffer.
Deputy campaign manager Kouri Marshall is no longer with the campaign, according to manager Chuck Thies. His exit, first tweeted by NBC 4’s Tom Sherwood, comes after Gray lost the straw poll to Bowser by 33 votes despite having three times as much support as Bowser in wards 7 and 8 in a Washington Post poll.
Thies confirmed that Marshall was involved in organizing turnout for the event. Marshall, who didn’t respond to LL’s requests for comment, managed Anita Bonds‘ successful at-large D.C. Council run last April. Thies declined to comment on whether he fired Marshall from Gray’s campaign, but did use the occasion to wax on the benefits of a small staff.
“I have purposely prevented the payroll from bloating during the first two months of this campaign,” Thies tells LL. “Because you can hire a few people for a long period of time, or you can hire a lot of people for a short period of time.”
